Söndagen den 29 augusti kl 12 – 14 i Kungsträdgården

Vi samlas under IEG’s banèr kl 11:30 i Kungsträdgården (vi har en väl synlig skylt).

• Artister (Amy Diamond, Timo Räisänen m.fl.) kamrater, aktiviteter, samtal från scenen (bl.a. med IES grundare Ms Barbara Bergström).
• Manifestation av att friskolor behövs och att många föräldrar och elever försvarar rätten att välja skola!

Friskoledagen ordnas av Friskolornas Riksförbund i samarbete med Svenskt Näringsliv. Det är viktigt, även med tanke på hur friskolor angrips i valrörelsen, att vi är många – elever, föräldrar, personal – som kommer till Kungsträdgården den 29 augusti, till stöd för vår skola.

Ingen förhandsanmälan. Ingen lunch serveras; ta gärna med något lätt.

Uppskattar mycket om så många som möjligt om så många som möjligt av elever, föräldrar, anda anhöriga – alla som vill stå upp för vår skola – följer mig till Friskoledagen, så att IEGS blir den mest synliga och stolta skolan i Kungsträdgården!

So the staff are set to take on the students in a football match this Thursday at Farsta IP.

The students are obviously a bit nervous about the outcome because they’re resulting to sledging to try and unsettle the staff psychologically.

May the best team win!

The Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet Yearbook is scheduled to be published very soon.

Ms Stecca writes that “the book costs 100kr this year and will be 60 pages with a shiny cover.”

Drama students helped entertain the school

Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet (IEGS) celebrated its 10th anniversary on Friday with a packed house.

Former students and teachers visited the school, which is now based at Allhelgonagatan 4, to reminisce and catch up with life at IEGS.

Graduates from the earliest days of IEG, when it was known as Engelska Skolan Söder and based in Enskede, stopped by to say “hello”.

Vice-principal Mr Phil Spires, who has been at Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet since its second year, proudly showed the returning graduates around.

“It was pleasing to see familiar faces visiting the school,” says Dr Margret Benedikz, the principal of Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet for the last five years.

“Gymnasiet is such an important time in people’s lives. It was wonderful to see them come back in groups, the friendships they made at the school having lasted. I was very pleased to show them the new building and catch up on all their news.”

Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet moved to Allhelgonagatan 4 in July 2008 after 8 years in Enskede where it was originally known as Engelska Skolan Söder. Started by Ms Barbara Bergström, an American, the original school company has grown into Internationella Engelska Skolan AB which now runs 17 schools across the country. Ms Bergström remains Chairman of the Board of Directors.

“There was a need for a school in Sweden that would appeal to students with a strong international connection,” says Dr Benedikz. “As we’ve grown from two classes in the very beginning to 700 students come this autumn we’ve worked hard to maintain an international feel.”

With over forty staff, many are native English speakers coming from the UK, Canada, the USA, South Africa and Australia. There’s also teachers from Sweden, Italy, France, Spain, Poland and China.

“It’s a very outward looking international school,” explains Dr Benedikz. “Friday’s anniversary celebrations drew on this culture in the school.”

There was a International Food Fair with a variety of foreign cuisines on show, along with a two drama performances, Art Exhibition, walk-in laboratory experiments and a concert showcasing the musical talent in the school.

The day was a time to look backwards and celebrate the past, but also very much a day to bring students and staff together as collectively they build the traditions that will make the school strong in the future.

Everyone at Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet looks forward to the next ten years!

Things are really hotting up at Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet with preparations underway for the 10th Anniversary celebrations on Friday May 7.

“We’ve been working really hard rehearsing all the music,” Dr Giles Whiteley says. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

“The set list has been fixed and the bands are practicing everyday to make sure their performances really reflect the musical talent in the school,” says Dr Whiteley.

As well as music, there will be drama performances on show, an art exhibition, a food fair, an art auction and a disco.

Parents and Old Students

Parents, former IEGS students and guests from the other Internationella Engelska Skolan schools are welcome from 15:00 onwards.

Professor Nils Gunnar Wahlgren on stroke treatment

Nils Gunnar Wahlgren, adjunct professor in Neurology at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Karolinska Institutet (KI) gave a guest lecture to students at Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet on Thursday.

Professor Wahlgren spoke about his involvement in clinical research and the treatment of stroke patients.

Showing slides and films from a number of cases studies, Professor Wahlgren talked at length about the causes of stroke, treatment and the world-leading research at KI that is being used to improve palliative care.

Students from both the Natural Science and Social Science programme attended Professor Wahlgren’s fascinating and inspiring lecture.

“It’s wonderful to have someone of the calibre of Professor Wahlgren visiting the school,” said principal Dr Benedikz. “We are thrilled that he could come and talk to students.”

Professor Wahlgren spoke warmly of his visit.

“They were a very engaged audience,” he said. “In fact they surprised me with the quality of their questions.”

Although many Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet student look to studying abroad, Professor Wahlgren was keen to stress the opportunities at Karolinska Institute.

“We know that people decide in gymnasium what they are going to do and we would like to attract people to science as well as commercial activities. Science can offer a challenging life,” said Wahlgren.

“Karolinska is ranked as one of the absolutely top medical universities in the world. There is a great amount of ongoing science taking place at Karolinska in different medical fields. Students who come to us can expect a lot of opportunities – to get involved with medical research, or become a clinician, to develop important drugs, or even go into into clinical research like me,” said Professor Wahlgren. “It’s inspiring to see how your research can directly effect patients”

Thursday evening sees Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet open its doors for the final Open House of the academic year.

If you’re planning to come along to the school, located just near Skanstull T-bana on Södermalm, make sure you’re there just before 18:00 as the evening starts off with a short talk from IEGS principal Dr Margret Benedikz.

You’ll then have the chance to wander around the building and talk with students and staff.
