Pavlov won today’s IHC Floorball competition at Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet.

Once again it’s good to see so many people participating in sports events at the school.

Everyone that took part worked hard to make it such an enjoyable event.

It’s important to remember though that although victory is sweet, we should also celebrate the way each House comes together to do their very best.

Of course, let’s also remember that sportsmanship is a vital part of every event!

Attention all IEGS students! MIT (USA) will be visiting the school this week.

MIT is one of the leading institutions of further education in the world, particularly specializing in the Natural Sciences and Technology.

A representative from MIT has requested to talk to our high-performing students at our school.

The representative will be here on Friday Oct. 28th at 1200 in the Staff Room.

You are invited to attend and will be excused from class to do so.

Celebrations of the European Day of Languages were a great success at Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet today.

Students who had modern language classes between 13.20 and 15.35 all came to the Aula in lieu of their usual classes.

“We had a 150-strong audience, at least!” says Ms Lescarmontier Banks.

The celebration consisted of a short introduction of the Day and its relevance for our international school, followed by performances in Spanish, German and Chinese.

“Brave students had plucked up the courage to sing on stage in the respective languages, and they were great!” says Ms Lescarmontier Banks.

A short film made by students of French was then shown – a promotion of the language itself and of our school in French, and there were a few fun moments of students experimenting with the language as well,

A video about Italians behaving in their own special and unique way in Europe created a lot of laughter, while a promotion of Chinese traditions transported everyone to another world.

Students all had a go at learning and teaching languages to each other: we heard over 30 languages and dialects spoken throughout the Aula.

“This went a long way to demonstrate just how linguistically rich our school community really is!” says Ms Lescarmontier Banks. “The enthusiasm generated among staff and students has made us want to do even better next year.”

The IEGS boys rugby team won a bronze medal at the Swedish national schools championship at the weekend

After losing three on Saturday, Sunday started with a win against Gothenburg Rugby, which saw the team go through to the semi-finals where they faced EXILES.

Nigel Sharp, who coaches the team, said: “I am afraid this match was at too high a pace and at an entirely different skill level so we didn’t really get to borrow the ball.”

However, despite previously losing to Kalmar, who had beaten IEGS on Saturday, IEGS beat Kalmar in the play-off for third place, winning the bronze medal.

Exemplary Students

“The team represented the school in an exemplary manner,” said Mr Sharp, “both on and off the field and both the school and the parents should be proud of their students/sons.”

The team are now on the look out for more players from the school to join the squad so they can enter a team in the “Mäldalsseries” under 19s.

Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet hopes to introduce the International Baccalaureate for students starting at the school in August 2012.

“We see the IB Programme as a wonderful opportunity for students to get an alternative qualification to the traditional Swedish programme that will help them get into university abroad,” says IEGS Principal Dr Margret Benedikz.

Ms Muchardt-Smith hopes IEGS will be able to offer the IB starting August 2012

The IEGS Chess Club starts today, Thursday September 1, 2011.

If you’re interested in joining, please meet up with Mr Bjarnestam outside the library.

“I have some great news,” Mr Bjarnestam says. “I have arranged for the school to get 20 brand new chess boards FOR FREE as I am starting up this club in collaboration with Stockholms schackförbund.”

Stockholms schackförbund arranges chess competitions and training opportunities for schools interested in chess.

“I hope the IEGS chess club will eventually be able to compete against other schools,” says Mr Bjarnestam.

On Thursday next week (September 8), Mr Bjarnestam and IEGS will be hosting Mr Jan Peter Palmblad from Stockholms schackförbund.

“Mr Palmblad’s coming to the school to give us the chess boards and further instructions on how to set up the chess club,” says Mr Bjarnestam. “He will also give a talk to all interested students at 11.30.”

The room for the event is still to be confirmed.

Lilla Augustpriset delas ut av Svenska Förläggareföreningen i samarbete med Posten. Augustgalan äger rum den 21 november 2011 i Stockholms Konserthus. Presskonferensen då de nominerade titlarna och de sex finalisterna till Lilla Augustpriset tillkännages äger rum den 17 oktober 2011.

IEGS Staff came in with a respectable 7th overall placing in the AXA Triathlon in Stockholm on Sunday.

“We were three places behind the rektors, but i think we did well!” said Ms Gavin.

Massive congratulations go to IEGS student Lachlan McPheat who won the overall youth event!

“The attitude of the students was fantastic and they were great ambassadors of IEGS!” said Ms Gavin, giving a special mention to Oscar Kamph who doubled up on swim and cycle because the student who had originally been pencilled in dropped out at the last moment.

Dr Pratt at full pace!

The end of year brings many emotions for the entire IEGS community. Excitement that summer is upon us comes directly into conflict with the stressful emotions of deadlines, finals, and – ahhhhh – the g word: grades!

The Student Health and Development Team thought it wise to offer a healthy alternative to cope with the challenge. A chance to experience peace and tranquility in the beautiful Swedish forests. Well…there was some peace in between all the splashing, laughing, roasting of marshmallows, tents falling down, and sharing of stories around the camp fire.

We did a camping trip last year to the same location at approximately the same time of year with the same good fortune of fine Swedish weather. This year we had a good mix of both Social and Natural Science students from all year groups.

Mr. Roberts (safety and security officer), Mr. Maier (school counselor), and Mr. Jones (math and physics teacher) met 17 students Friday morning at Handen Station (not too early…10am) and checked to make sure no one was in high heels.

Once everyone had checked their equipment, we said goodbye to civilization and began our 13k hike along the beautiful Sörmlandsleden trail with our camping destination being the Paradisets naturreservat.

The only scary incidents during the trip was the bizarre happenings to Mr. Jones tent during the night – no doubt payback for his math / physics tests?!!?? And then there was a daring rescue by Mr. Jones when Mr. Maier’s 4 year old son Aiden slipped into the lake when trying to catch his 100th tadpole.

Otherwise it was a safe, fun, and re-energizing trip that helped those who journeyed finish the year on a positive note.

We look forward to our return to Paradiset next year in June!
