The IEGS boys rugby team won a bronze medal at the Swedish national schools championship at the weekend

After losing three on Saturday, Sunday started with a win against Gothenburg Rugby, which saw the team go through to the semi-finals where they faced EXILES.

Nigel Sharp, who coaches the team, said: “I am afraid this match was at too high a pace and at an entirely different skill level so we didn’t really get to borrow the ball.”

However, despite previously losing to Kalmar, who had beaten IEGS on Saturday, IEGS beat Kalmar in the play-off for third place, winning the bronze medal.

Exemplary Students

“The team represented the school in an exemplary manner,” said Mr Sharp, “both on and off the field and both the school and the parents should be proud of their students/sons.”

The team are now on the look out for more players from the school to join the squad so they can enter a team in the “Mäldalsseries” under 19s.

IEGS Staff came in with a respectable 7th overall placing in the AXA Triathlon in Stockholm on Sunday.

“We were three places behind the rektors, but i think we did well!” said Ms Gavin.

Massive congratulations go to IEGS student Lachlan McPheat who won the overall youth event!

“The attitude of the students was fantastic and they were great ambassadors of IEGS!” said Ms Gavin, giving a special mention to Oscar Kamph who doubled up on swim and cycle because the student who had originally been pencilled in dropped out at the last moment.

The Inter House Athletics Competition was a great success this year with students from all four Houses competing.

Individual Trophy Winniers

Lady’s

• Fastest lady – 100m Öznur Sönmez – S1B – 13.35
• Johanna Lagus – S1A – 1301.7 pts

Gentlemen

• Fastest man – Oliver Sharp N1C – 11.57
• Victor ludorum – Nicolas Lubwama – N2C – 1851.6 pts

Overall scores

Mr Maier said: “We had everything from the ring announcer to ring girl holding up the round cards!! We even had a very special guest, Roger Petterson who is a famous Swedish boxing champion. The boxing club has been a part of this school for a number of years and was very excited to showcase the sport.”

Mr Maier took time out of his schedule to provide a run down of the events that took place:

First match

Zinar “Bang Bang” Budak of PAVLOV (N1D) Vs. Alex “TNT” Tingström of CURIE (N2B)

Zinar and Alex went head to head for three great rounds of boxing. They both used considerable skill, delivering a battery effective jabs and straights.

In the end Zinar of PAVLOV came out with a victory.

Second match

Crystal “The Dangerous Diamond” of PAVLOV (N1C) Vs. Sousan “Sock it to Em” Seoud of KING (S3C)

Mr Maier confessed that this was: “an intense match! The girls went out really strong and didn’t hold back for a second. The fight went one round and was won by Crystal of PAVLOV on account of a TKO injury. Sousan wanted to continue and had the true passion of a real champion who never quits.”

Neverthelss, as the rules stipulate the match was stopped because of injury and Chrystal was declared the winner.

Third Match

Jerrymore “The Black Mamba” Kisekka of RUSSELL (S1B) Vs. Apy “The Big Apple” Lubwimi of CURIE (N2B)

The crowd went wild during this match, Mr Maier told IEG News: “Both boxers were outstanding and gave everything. The fight was very even in the first round, Jerrymore scoring a great second round, and Apy coming ahead in the third to win the CURRIE house another trophy.!

The Boxing Club

Mr. Kendrick and Mr. Maier want to thank everyone who participated and helped make the tournament such a success, especially those in each corner for their House.

Mr Maier says: “Everyone did a wonderful job. They helped make it a success so I’m sure we’ll go on to have more boxing competitions.”

Both Mr Maier and Mr Kendrick, who boxed for the USA, welcome any new members looking for a rigorous workout to come and join our club.

The Boxing Club meets every Thursday at 16:15.

Thursday saw Curie beat Russell in the final of the girls Inter House football tournament, and Pavlov boys beat Curie boys.

It was a thrilling afternoon’s football with all the teams playing with commitment and skill.

Curie Girls vs Russell Girls

After Curie went 1-0 up in the first half, Russell threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Curie goal for the remainder of the match but just couldn’t find a way through.

Even when they had a glorious opportunity to level the match with a penalty 2 minutes from time, they squandered their chance. It was rough justice for a team that passed and moved with some guile.

Curie, nevertheless, were worthy champions for their committed defending, furious midfield play, and determination to ride their luck.

Pavlov celebrate an infamous victory

After the drama of the girls’ final, the boys teams played out a thrilling match with Pavlov emerging victorious 3-0.

The score somewhat flattered Pavlov because Curie, in spite of their failure to hit the net, played some excellent football. They threatened to score throughout the match and if it wasn’t for some sublime defending from Pavlov the scores could have been much closer.

Cold, but not broken!

It was wonderful to see so many supporters, both teachers and students, at the matches despite the weather. The spectators merrily cheered their teams on and seemed to have as much fun as the players on the pitch.

A big thank you to Mr Knox for organising the tournament and Alex Benedikz for refereeing.

Victory did not come as easy in the second round of the basket ball competition on Tuesday evening as the team from Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet Södermalm suffered defeat at the hands of Farsta Gymnasium.

The evening started well enough with IEGS recording a comfortable win over Tyresö Gymnasium.

“Samir (N1B) scored a great debut basked,” said Coach Spires. “Christoffer (N2B) scored a lot of fast break points, and Philmon (S2C) played very well with some excellent long range shooting, ball handling and defence play.”

Unfortunately for IEGS Farsta had too many experienced club players.

“I think some of our team regretted not having turned up for practice as often as they should,” said Coach Spires, “but our mixture of experience and enthusiasm was evident on court. Hareta shot well. Filip (S1B) needs to work on his aggression management though,” Mr Spires warned, “but when he does he’ll be a very good player.”

In the cold light of day IEGS aren’t sure what this defeat means in terms of our possible progression in the tournament; however, rest assured IEGS News will keep you up to date.

Maybe Stevie G could learn from the lads at IEG?

IEGS played IEG Värmdö Gymnasiet, Nacka Gymnasiet, and Stockholm och Restaurant Gymnasiet.

“We played three matches,” explains team coach, Mr Leon Kühn. “Going into the last match we were equal on points with Nacka and needed a draw or win to go through. Although it was a bit nervy after two of the team were sent off right near the end, we managed to get a draw.”

“The lads really played with their heart and were VERY enthusiastic,” says Mr Kühn. “They did the school proud.”

A special mention goes out to Zinar Budak who was IEGS’ MOTM.

USA? China? Watch out for IEG!

“I think the final score was 53-31,” says Coach Spires, giddy with the taste of victory.

Kärrtorp were somewhat surprised with IEGS fielding two girls in the team, but IEG had the last laugh with both girls impressing against Kärrstorp’s all-boys team.

“Maryam (S1A) and Hareta (S1A) played some excellent plays,” says Spires, “although at times they were a bit aggressive.”

“Marius (N2C) was steady and consistent and showed his experience, whilstFlip D (S1B) made a lot of noise when fouled but thankfully didn’t pick up any injuries,” says Coach Spires “Christoffer (N2B) put in a lot of effort.”

Adrian K showed lots of enthusiasm despite a slight injury and Kelvan (N1A) also played well.

“The lad needs to work on his fitness though,” admits Spires.

Finally, Samir (N1B) made an excellent debut, according to Coach Spire, and Philmon (S2C) controlled the game from the outset.
