Yesterday, February 21, was International Mother Language Day in case you missed it.
International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by UNESCO’s General Conference back in November 1999.
Ever since 2000, the day has been used to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.
At Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet, where considerable emphasis is put on having an excellent command of English, we recognise that languages are fundamentally important to culture and understanding, and this belief effects much of the work we do in promoting understanding, tolerance and dialogue through multilingualism and multiculturalism.
As the UN notes:
languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage. All moves to promote the dissemination of mother tongues will serve not only to encourage linguistic diversity and multilingual education but also to develop fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue.
At IEG, languages are an integral part of all our programmes, including the Social Science Programme with a Specialization in Languages.
