On Tuesday students and staff at IEG came together to compete in the first annual House Sports Day. The event took place at Ursvik Motionsgård, Stockholm.
Staff were out early preparing the event, which was organized by Mr Leon Kuhn, Ms Julia Stecca, and Dr James Pratt.
“All the staff involved worked very hard to make the day a success,” said Mr Kuhn.
The students arrived at 12:30 to compete in a 5 km run.
“The turn out was excellent,” said Mr Kuhn, “with students from all Houses competing. Pavlov, in particular, turned out en masse.”
Before the race began, students rocked out to the theme of Rocky as part of a warm-up lead by the teachers.
“We wanted something that would set the right tone for the event,” said Ms Stecca, “and this was a lot of fun.”

IEG athletes are go!
“I really enjoyed Ms. Stecca and Mr. Kuhn’s warm-up,” IEG student Victoria Ström tweeted. “Haven’t seen anything like that before.”

The grace and speed that is Mr Spires.
Vice-principal Mr Phil Spires drew considerable attention as he demonstrated his elegance and silky smooth running style with particular aplomb, powering past students.
Pavlov Win Sports Day
Each House was awarded points for the number of students attending, competing and where they finished. After careful checking, Pavlov House were declared the winners with an average of 8.11 compared to King’s 3.55, Curie’s 3.29, and Russell’s 3.09.
“They won by quite a landslide,” said Mr Spires. “It was the kind of victory that will make their Housemaster, Mr Knox, very proud.”
Year Winners
The times for the fastest male and female students in each year were as follows:
- Year 1: Nicholas Lubwama (Pavlov: 19.58) – Evelina Adams (Russell: 20:12)
- Year 2: Apy Lubwimi & Merhawie Sisay (Curie: 18:05) – Fatima Abdalla (Russell: 25:40)
- Year 3: Jakob Broman Kjulsten (Pavlov: 20:37) – Evelina Kogner (King: 26:50)
Congratulations to Curie’s Apy Lubwimi & Merhawie Sisay who jointly recorded the fastest time of the day.
A Special Message from the Principal
“I’m delighted Sports Day was such a success,” said school principal, Dr Margret Benedikz. “I’d like to thank all the students and staff who made the day such a special one to remember. Particular thanks go to to Ms Stecca, Mr Kuhn and Mr Pratt for organizing the event. As a member of Russell House I hope we do much better next year!”
