Professor Nils Gunnar Wahlgren on stroke treatment
Nils Gunnar Wahlgren, adjunct professor in Neurology at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Karolinska Institutet (KI) gave a guest lecture to students at Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet on Thursday.
Professor Wahlgren spoke about his involvement in clinical research and the treatment of stroke patients.
Showing slides and films from a number of cases studies, Professor Wahlgren talked at length about the causes of stroke, treatment and the world-leading research at KI that is being used to improve palliative care.
Students from both the Natural Science and Social Science programme attended Professor Wahlgren’s fascinating and inspiring lecture.
“It’s wonderful to have someone of the calibre of Professor Wahlgren visiting the school,” said principal Dr Benedikz. “We are thrilled that he could come and talk to students.”
Professor Wahlgren spoke warmly of his visit.
“They were a very engaged audience,” he said. “In fact they surprised me with the quality of their questions.”
Although many Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet student look to studying abroad, Professor Wahlgren was keen to stress the opportunities at Karolinska Institute.
“We know that people decide in gymnasium what they are going to do and we would like to attract people to science as well as commercial activities. Science can offer a challenging life,” said Wahlgren.
“Karolinska is ranked as one of the absolutely top medical universities in the world. There is a great amount of ongoing science taking place at Karolinska in different medical fields. Students who come to us can expect a lot of opportunities – to get involved with medical research, or become a clinician, to develop important drugs, or even go into into clinical research like me,” said Professor Wahlgren. “It’s inspiring to see how your research can directly effect patients”
