IEGS celebrates its 20th anniversary
Our school halls are clean, the floors are polished, there are mixed smells of paint and new wooden furniture in the air. My summer glow is fading, and I have that “back to school” feeling tingling in my body. Yep, it is time for a new academic year to begin!
This academic year of 2019/20, Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet Södermalm (IEGS) celebrates its 20th anniversary. In August 1999, the school opened with 56 students and offered two national programs, the Natural Science and Social Science programs. Today, IEGS educates over 700 students in four national programs (Natural Science, Social Science, Economy and Aesthetics) and the International Baccalaureate diploma program.
Throughout two decades, IEGS has maintained its commitment to our students to provide an English learning environment that is calm and safe, with high academic expectations. At IEGS, we prepare our students to be critical but open minded. We encourage them to work collaboratively and with integrity. We continue to guide (and at times lead) our students on their life-long learning journey, both academically and socially. We equip our students with the skills needed so that they can be the best version of themselves, reaching the goals that they are setting. IEGS learners are prepared to face the unknown challenges of the 21st century, with resilience, and without fear.
At IEGS, we recognize that imparting knowledge is not enough to prepare the next generation of learners for the challenges of their future. We strive to educate our pupils to be independent, to think deeply across disciplines and beyond national boundaries. At IEGS we as professional educators have an opportunity to model lifelong learning in our students by reflecting on our teachings and the needs of a global, sustainable and digital future. We collaborate to challenge young, curious, open minds that are looking for opportunities to be innovative for generations to come. This is a great responsibility and an exciting challenge for us educators at IEGS.
As we begin the new academic year, I wish to extend a warm welcome to our new and returning students and staff to IEGS. May the year ahead be filled with new beginnings and possibilities. Happy first day of school to all, and to IEGS, a happy 20th birthday!
