IHC Creative Writing 2024
One of our much appreciated inter house competitions is the IHC Creative Writing. This year’s winners were selected by Creepypodden @sverigesradio inspired by the theme of Sadness. We are proud to announce the short story, “Urchin” by Elisha in NV3A, and poem “Remembrance’s Embrace”, by Nathalie in NV3C were selected. What a wonderful opportunity and recognition for our students - Congratulations!

Urchin
En berättelse där läsaren genast blir nyfiken och dras in i händelseförloppet. Relationen
mellan huvudpersonen och hennes beskyddare - eller vad man ska kalla honom, själv kräver
han att bli tilltalad ”far” - framstår tydligt och utan onödiga förklaringar som det ensidiga
utnyttjande det rör sig om. Speldosan blir en okonstlad metafor för det som är lika vackert
som ouppnåeligt för flickan i berättelsen, och slås följdriktigt sönder, som en lika tydlig
metafor för hur hennes oblida öde tycks hopplöst förutbestämt. Som en väl genomförd sorts
pastisch på Charles Dickens, rör sig Urchin i 1800-talets Londonslum, föreställer jag mig.
Fint berättad, okonstlad och imponerande genom att kunna berätta en djupt existentiell
historia så kortfattat.
A story where the reader immediately becomes curious and is drawn into the course of
events. The relationship between the protagonist and her protector - or what to call him, he
himself demands to be addressed as "father" - appears clearly and without unnecessary
explanations such as the one-sided exploitation involved. The music box becomes a crude
metaphor for what is as beautiful as it is unattainable for the girl in the story, and is
consequently shattered, as an equally clear metaphor for how her oblivious fate seems
hopelessly predetermined. Like a well-executed sort of pastiche of Charles Dickens, Urchin
moves in the 19th century London slums, I imagine. Nicely told, unadorned and impressive,
by being able to tell a deeply existential story so succinctly.
Remembrance’s Embrace
En dikt, eller kanske vers, som skulle göra sig bra som låt- eller balladtext. Och som med stor
precision och väl valda ord beskriver den avgrundsdjupa sorgen i att ta farväl av en döende
pappa. Jag har själv gått igenom det, sittande vid min egen pappas säng när han tynade bort
och kan lätt relatera till texten. Fint!
A poem that would do well as song or ballad lyrics. And which with great precision and well-
chosen words describes the abysmal sadness of saying goodbye to a dying father. I've been
through it myself, sitting at my own father's bedside as he faded away, and can easily relate
to the lyrics. Beautiful!
